Why Glass Bottles Are Used for Hot Filling in Beverages

2024-08-23 22:51:24

Hot filling is a process of filling liquid products into containers at high temperatures. The high temperature kills microorganisms in the product, including bacteria, yeast, and mold. It prevents the product from deteriorating during storage and transportation. Hot filling allows for the use of fewer or even no preservatives while extending the shelf life of the product. Without hot filling, harmful bacteria in bottles or liquids may damage or contaminate the product, shortening the shelf life. Using hot filling extends shelf life and reduces food waste.

Hot filling usually has the following steps:

Heating: The beverage is heated to a certain temperature (usually between 85-95 degrees Celsius) to ensure that any microorganisms that may be present are killed.

Filling: The heated beverage is quickly filled into a sterilized container.

Sealing: The container is sealed immediately after filling to prevent the entry of external air or microorganisms.

Inverted cooling: After sealing, the bottle is sometimes inverted for some time to ensure that the inside of the bottle cap is also sterilized. Then gradually cool it down to return the beverage to room temperature.

Why use glass bottles for hot filling?

Glass bottles have long been widely used in hot filling in the beverage industry. Glass beverage bottles can withstand high filling temperatures. Compared with plastic bottles, glass does not decompose due to high temperature, avoiding potential health risks. He will not deform or release harmful substances. Glass bottles have excellent barrier properties that prevent oxygen, moisture, and other external contaminants from entering the bottle, thus better protecting the quality of the beverage. At the same time, glass will not absorb or alter the flavor of the beverage, ensuring that the beverage maintains its original flavor throughout its shelf life. Furthermore, glass bottles can be recycled many times, which is very much in line with the concept of environmental protection. In addition, glass bottles are often regarded as a premium packaging material, which can increase the market appeal of a product.
