Autumn is here, and various fruits are ripening one after another. Has it also inspired you to make your jam? To make jam, we need to prepare suitable empty wide-mouthed glass bottles or glass jars as containers. But did you know? After buying a new glass bottle, it is not enough to just wash it with water. It is best to thoroughly disinfect it to ensure safety. So how to disinfect glass bottles at home? The following are two common disinfection methods.
Boiling Method – the safest way
- Thoroughly wash the glass bottle and bottle cap.
- Place the glass bottle horizontally in a pot and add cold water. The water should cover the bottle. Use medium heat to heat. Glass is sensitive to temperature changes, so it needs to be heated gradually from cold water. Do not put it directly into boiling water.
- After the water boils, turn to medium-low heat and continue to cook for 10 minutes. If the glass bottle is not completely immersed, you can use a clamp to turn it over to ensure that every part is disinfected.
- Take out the glass bottle with a clamp and stand it on a clean dishcloth or kitchen paper to dry, and ensure that the bottle cap is also thoroughly dried.

Microwave Method – the most convenient method
- Choose a sealable glass bottle and wash it with warm or cold water without drying it.
- Place the oven rack on the baking tray to collect water. Put the glass bottle upside down on the baking rack.
- There is no need to preheat the oven. Put the glass bottle in and adjust it to 100-120 degrees. Continue to bake for 5-10 minutes after the temperature is reached.
- The residual water in the bottle will evaporate directly at a high temperature, and the sterilization is also completed. Wear heat-insulating gloves and carefully take out the bottle, and you can use it directly.
Tips:
- If the glass bottle has a rubber ring or paper label, you need to remove it before sterilization.
- The oven does not need to be preheated in advance. The bottle and the oven slowly heat up to prevent the glass bottle from breaking due to excessive temperature difference.
